Columbia SC History

The History of Columbia, SC

Strategically located in the center of the state in Richland County, Columbia was made the capital of the state of South Carolina in 1786. It was only the 2nd planned city in the United States and it grew to a population of over 1,000 people and 250 homes by the turn of the century.

The city of Columbia, SC was designed as 400 blocks (divided into half acre lots) in a 2-mile square along the Congaree River.
